“We Didn’t Just Manage Today, We Built the Future,” Says Üstel in Three-Year Government Review

Prime Minister Ünal Üstel outlined the achievements of his coalition government at a press conference titled “Three Years in the Service of the People.” Since taking office on May 12, 2022, the UBP-DP-YDP coalition has delivered significant progress despite challenging circumstances.

“This three-year period is proof of our determination and vision,” Üstel said. “We didn’t just manage today; we built the future.”
Record Economic Growth
Highlighting economic success, Üstel noted that the gross minimum wage surged from 7,000 Turkish Lira in 2022 to 43,469 TL in 2025, marking a 521% increase. He emphasized that this wage level now exceeds the European average and that of Southern Cyprus when measured in euros. Public sector salaries have similarly improved.
Robust Partnership with Turkey
The prime minister detailed the economic and financial cooperation agreements with Turkey, which have channeled 46.4 billion TL into the country over the last three years. He stressed that these agreements are aligned with the needs of the population and have become a key development model for the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.
Advancements in Education and Healthcare
Üstel announced the opening of 23 new schools and the launch of 12 additional school projects during this period. Healthcare investments also reached record levels, while social housing initiatives were revived after a 30-year pause. The “My First Home Credit” program enabled 924 young families to purchase homes.
Historic Energy Investments
He revealed a $110 million investment in the state electricity company, KIB-TEK, including the commissioning of mobile generators imported from Turkey. Üstel also announced the signing of initial agreements for a subsea electricity connection with Turkey, aiming to secure energy supply and transform the country into a green energy hub.
Progress in Sports, Digital Transformation, and Infrastructure
The government increased the sports project budget from 20 million TL to 300 million TL, renovating multiple facilities and constructing new sports halls. Üstel also announced the enactment of the Digital Transformation and e-Government Agency Law, with the full e-Government system planned to launch by 2026.
Major Transport and Tourism Developments
Üstel celebrated the long-awaited opening of Ercan Airport, which has reached record passenger numbers. Several road projects, including Lefke–Güzelyurt Road, Kyrenia–Alsancak Bypass, and coastal roads to the Karpas Peninsula, were completed. Tourism highlights included the restoration of Kyrenia’s Ancient Harbour, the first phase completion of the Denktaş Memorial Project, and the launch of the “Island Cyprus” promotional campaign targeting the Turkish market.
Support Following the Earthquake
Honoring those lost in the devastating February 2023 earthquake, Üstel assured that the government continues to support affected families and pursue justice.
“Results Over Words”
Emphasizing a results-driven approach, Üstel noted that 166 laws were passed in Parliament during this period, enabling wide-reaching reforms. The government remains committed to building a society “strengthened by tourism, rooted in culture, empowered by youth, and respectful of the environment.”
Üstel concluded by pledging to maintain the same level of dedication moving forward.
