European Parliament Disavows MEP Panayiotou’s Moscow Victory Day Trip
The European Parliament stated on Thursday that no official mission was authorised to Moscow, referring to a visit of a group of MEPs including Greek Cypriot MEP Fidias Panayiotou to Russia for Victory Day commemorations.
“Please note that there was no official EP mission to Moscow. Members who travelled there did so in their personal capacity,” the European Parliament press service said in an official statement.
The parliament clarified that MEPs do not represent the institution when travelling privately and highlighted accountability requirements for such trips.
“The Implementing Measures for the Code of Conduct underline that Members shall disclose their attendance at events organised by a third party in cases where travel, accommodation or subsistence expenses are paid or reimbursed by a third party,” the statement continued.
According to parliament regulations, declarations of participation in third-party events must be published under the ‘declarations’ section of each MEP’s official profile on the European Parliament website.
The press service emphasised that “Members are solely responsible for the content and completeness of the information provided in their declarations of private interests.”
