HP Spokesperson Moral: Civilian Coup Against Judiciary by Government

People’s Party (HP) Spokesperson Aral Moral has condemned the government’s decision not to lift the parliamentary immunity of an MP implicated in a fake diploma scandal, calling it a "civilian coup against the judiciary." He accused the government of leaving behind destruction in multiple sectors, from the economy to education.

According to an HP statement, Moral made his remarks during an appearance on the program Kaptan’s Diary, hosted by Ahmet Kaptan on Kanal T.
Moral pointed out the contradiction between the government’s optimistic rhetoric and its financial practices: “They claim the economy is improving, yet they resort to domestic borrowing almost every month. They keep issuing government bonds. This leaves the country in ruins,” he said.
Addressing recent accidents involving student transport, Moral referred to a school bus that caught fire on the Kyrenia road and another whose brakes failed, leading to a crash. “If you take on the responsibility of transporting students, your duty isn’t limited to just that. You are also responsible for inspecting vehicle conditions, age, maintenance, and safety,” he stated.
“This Is a Struggle for the Homeland”
On the fake diploma issue, Moral said the People’s Party’s fight should not be seen merely as a party effort. “This is a national struggle. Since the scandal emerged, we’ve worked to keep it in the public eye and generate pressure. You’ll recall that we submitted the names of public employees with degrees from the implicated university to the police for verification. This isn’t just about one individual’s diploma,” he said.
Responding to claims by UBP MP Emrah Yeşilırmak that there is personal animosity toward him, Moral said: “If that were true, we wouldn’t have pursued action against the many other individuals mentioned.”
He emphasized the importance of resolving the issue for the higher education sector. “The sector has already suffered damage. What’s needed is a clear message to the world: that these matters are not being buried, that those found guilty are punished, and that the dirt is not swept under the rug,” he said.
“Government Committed a Civilian Coup by Protecting MP”
Moral accused the government of undermining the rule of law by refusing to lift the MP's immunity. “That MP previously claimed not to be hiding behind immunity. Clearly, he is. Clearly, he’s running. Clearly, he has something to fear,” he said.
“Three Years of Total Collapse”
Addressing a question about a recent press conference assessing the government’s three-year term, Moral said: “They keep repeating the same line—that the minimum wage now exceeds that of many European countries. It does, but what about purchasing power? Compare how much meat you could buy five years ago with the minimum wage to how much you can buy now. You’ll see the truth doesn’t match their narrative.”
He criticized Prime Minister Ünal Üstel and his administration for painting a rosy picture while ignoring the realities. “If you believe the country is progressing just because your inner circle is profiting, you are gravely mistaken,” he said.
“If You Have Authority Over Student Transport, You Must Also Inspect It”
Moral highlighted the shift to makeshift classrooms in tents and containers over the past three years. “After the February 6 earthquake, funds collected for school repairs were used elsewhere. Children were left in tents,” he said.
He also pointed to repeated scandals in the health sector during the same period. “This has not been a period of transparency, accountability, or public oversight,” he added.
Recalling the recent school bus incidents on the Kyrenia road, Moral stressed the need for thorough vehicle inspections. He referenced work carried out by former HP Public Works and Transport Minister Tolga Atakan, which remains archived at the ministry. “Mr. Atakan introduced a new vehicle inspection system, technical equipment and modification standards, and comprehensive legal regulations for traffic safety. Those in office now must take the necessary steps instead of merely observing,” he concluded.
