Speaking in response to criticisms by CTP MPs during a session of the Republic Assembly, Ertuğruloğlu said that the policies imposed by the Greek Cypriot administration on the Turkish Cypriot people were a source of discomfort for everyone.

He noted that the Greek Cypriot side frames the Cyprus issue as one of “invasion and occupation,” and sees a solution as the “end of the occupation.” In contrast, Ertuğruloğlu said the Turkish Cypriot side pursues a political approach based on building the future on the foundations of 1974, adding, “There are two diametrically opposed approaches.”

He described the recent remarks by CTP MPs about federation as “spreading honey and butter on the Greek Cypriot side’s bread,” and criticized them for opposing the Turkish Cypriot demand for sovereign equality in the same way as the Greek Cypriot leadership. “The recent measures have nothing to do with that,” he added.

Ertuğruloğlu emphasized that he had been repeating the same arguments for 40 years, not because of stubbornness, but because “we have been facing the same problem for 40 years.” He asserted that as long as the Greek Cypriots continue to be recognized as the Republic of Cyprus and are indulged by the international community, “no matter how much you negotiate, nothing will come out of it.”

He argued that the Greek Cypriots could not even tolerate an elevation in the status of Turkish Cypriots. “You portray it as if the Greek Cypriots want to negotiate federation with us and we are the ones fleeing—this is simply not true,” he said.

Responding to an intervention by independent MP Ayşegül Baybars, who inquired about arrests related to property issues, Ertuğruloğlu stated that work on the matter with Ankara was ongoing. He emphasized that the issue would not be resolved with political rhetoric, but rather through legal groundwork, data, and experience.

Reiterating that serious negotiations were continuing, he concluded: “These policies will not go unanswered.”
