Eylem: Intervention in Press Freedom Is Unacceptable

President of the Cyprus Turkish Secondary Education Teachers’ Union (KTOEÖS), Selma Eylem, condemned the intervention against journalists during a visit to Bekirpaşa High School, describing it as an “unacceptable assault.” She emphasized that the struggle for teachers’ educational rights and press freedom would persist.

Speaking on behalf of the KTOEÖS Executive Board, Eylem stated that they visited Bekirpaşa High School to draw public attention to teachers’ resistance against the Disciplinary Regulation, the pressure and threats they face, the violation of students’ right to education, and the overall situation.
Eylem noted that journalists from Özgür Gazete and Kıbrıs Gerçek accompanied them during the visit, and she expressed gratitude to the press members who reported on the realities faced by teachers and students and supported their cause.
However, she claimed that the journalists were reported to the police by the school principal upon the instructions of the Ministry of Education. The reporters were subsequently taken to İskele Police Station, where legal charges were read to them and their statements were taken. Eylem described this as “an unacceptable assault.”
“Journalism is not a crime. Freedom of thought, expression, and the press are fundamental rights and freedoms,” said Eylem, vowing to continue the struggle against oppressive attitudes.
She also reaffirmed their commitment to the fight for scientific, secular education and a democratic society, declaring, “Despite all your impositions and encirclement, we will continue to struggle, side by side, for an independent, free, and democratic future where we can live with dignity.”
