Christodoulides Meets UK Prime Minister Starmer in London

Greek Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides met with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer yesterday evening in London.

According to the Fileleftheros newspaper, during the meeting, Christodoulides emphasized the United Kingdom’s role in efforts to restart negotiations on the Cyprus issue.
In a statement following the meeting, Christodoulides spoke about the current situation regarding the Cyprus problem and highlighted two significant developments: the upcoming visit to the island by Maria Angela Holguin, the newly reappointed UN Secretary-General’s Special Adviser on Cyprus, and the appointment of Johannes Hahn as the EU’s Special Representative for Cyprus.
Christodoulides stressed the importance of the UK’s role as a guarantor power and a participant in the expanded meetings. He noted that they discussed ways to resume substantive negotiations.
Referring to the comprehensive cooperation agreement reached between the UK and the European Union to reshape bilateral relations after Brexit, Christodoulides pointed out that he was the first EU member state leader to meet with Prime Minister Starmer following this agreement.
He also mentioned that, since Cyprus will hold the EU Presidency at the start of 2026, they discussed UK-EU relations. Additionally, they focused on advancing a strategic agreement on security and defense for the future.
The newspaper noted that this meeting was the third between Prime Minister Starmer, who took office in July 2024, and President Christodoulides, reflecting the excellent bilateral relations between the two countries.
Fileleftheros also recalled Starmer’s visit to Cyprus in December 2024.
