Akpınar Backtracks on Checkpoint Closure Remarks, Blames Media for Manipulation

Democratic Party (DP) MP Serhat Akpınar, who recently sparked public outrage with his call to close border checkpoints, has now retracted his statements, accusing the media of distorting his words and manipulating public opinion.

In a written statement, Akpınar claimed that his remarks were taken out of context and that his warning was driven by concerns for the peace process on the island.
Appearing on BRT, Akpınar had previously stated, “Negotiations with South Cyprus must end. In fact, the checkpoints must also be closed,” prompting strong reactions from the public and civil society. Despite this statement being on record, Akpınar denied making such a proposal, instead blaming journalists for conducting a manipulative campaign aimed at discrediting him.
He argued that his comments about “consequences that could go as far as checkpoint closures” were not meant as a threat but rather as an expression of concern for maintaining the peace process. “Taking this sentence out of context to turn me into a target is not only unethical but also risks dividing and polarizing our society,” he said.
Akpınar’s retraction has drawn criticism from those who see the move as an attempt to deflect accountability amid mounting public pressure.
