Tatar Rejects Proposed Tripartite Meeting Amid Property Disputes

President Ersin Tatar announced that he conveyed to the United Nations Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy on Cyprus, Maria Angela Holguin, that the Turkish Cypriot side is ready to resume negotiations on the basis of sovereign equality.

Speaking to the press following the meeting held at the Presidential Palace, Tatar emphasized their insistence on "direct contact, direct trade, and direct flights."
Tatar said recent actions by the Greek Cypriot side have undermined the basis for negotiations. "The Greek leadership’s provocative steps are destroying the grounds for talks. Unilateral moves on property issues are obstructing healthy progress in other areas. For this reason, I asked the special envoy to convey the meeting minutes to Greek Cypriot leader Nikos Christodoulides," he stated.
Addressing the issue of crossing points, Tatar said the Greek Cypriot administration frequently puts forward proposals that contradict the spirit of the crossings. "I absolutely reject the idea of a pedestrian crossing point. This is not our priority. However, we are open to steps that will ease vehicle congestion at existing checkpoints," he noted.
Tatar also ruled out participating in a proposed tripartite meeting, saying, "In light of the recent detentions over property issues, such a meeting would benefit no one."
