PM Üstel: “The Turkish Cypriot People Cannot Be Separated from Production”

Speaking at the opening ceremony of the Vadili Milk Collection Center, Prime Minister Ünal Üstel emphasized that the Turkish Cypriot people will never be detached from production. He also condemned Greek Cypriot attempts to obstruct the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus’s halloumi exports, stating, “They forget that we have the Republic of Turkey by our side.”

In his remarks, Üstel highlighted the government’s achievements over the past three years, noting that key projects and reforms promised to the public are being fulfilled under the economic and financial cooperation protocol signed with Turkey. He noted that the milk collection center in Vadili was part of the government program and reiterated their determination to complete all unfinished projects—such as the Ercan Airport—regardless of political affiliation or criticism.

The prime minister pointed to previously stalled projects like roadworks and milk collection centers, which were resumed with the support of the Republic of Turkey. He said they had made significant progress in addressing shortfalls in sectors ranging from agriculture and tourism to infrastructure.

Üstel also drew attention to the historical resilience of the Turkish Cypriot community, recalling its struggle for existence since the 1950s and the peace brought to the island by Turkey’s 1974 Peace Operation. “Societies that abandon production are doomed to disappear,” he said, stressing the importance of prioritizing production.

On the subject of halloumi exports, Üstel said serious efforts were made—with Turkey’s support—to meet EU standards. He criticized the Greek Cypriot administration for attempting to block exports and highlighted their actions in areas like construction and tourism as further efforts to marginalize the Turkish Cypriot economy.

“No matter what they do, they won’t be able to detach us from production,” Üstel declared. “They forget that we have the Republic of Turkey by our side.”

Turning to global events, Üstel expressed concern over the ongoing conflict in Israel and Palestine, criticizing the international community’s silence. “We are much more fortunate than Palestine because we have our motherland. Hand in hand with the Republic of Turkey, we will make every sacrifice necessary to bring our country to a more modern and advanced stage,” he concluded.
