Tatar: "Arrests Aimed at Destabilisation Will Benefit No One"

President Ersin Tatar has accused the Greek Cypriot administration of attempting to destabilise the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus through arrests and threats, warning that such actions undermine hopes for a two-state cooperation and ultimately bring satisfaction to no one.

Speaking at the conference titled “Developments in the Turkish and Global Economy and Future Vision,” Tatar expressed his gratitude to Turkey’s Minister of Treasury and Finance, Mehmet Şimşek, praising his experience and disciplined approach to economic management. Tatar noted his past experience working closely with Şimşek between 2009 and 2013, saying, “I learned a great deal from him. We know that the Ministry of Economy succeeded through reform, prudent measures, and the ability to say ‘no’ when necessary.”
Highlighting the challenges of maintaining discipline in state governance, Tatar added, “We use the Turkish lira, and it is a privilege for us to benefit from the insights and efforts of the Republic of Turkey.”
He outlined the TRNC’s goal of developing its natural resources through tourism, higher education, and the information technology sector, voicing his support for the vision of transforming the TRNC into an “island of technology,” as highlighted during TEKNOFEST. He stressed the importance of infrastructure investment and a green transition in realising this vision.
“We also extend our thanks to Selçuk Bayraktar. Given the island’s natural resources and opportunities, the vision of a technology island is achievable. With the necessary infrastructure and a commitment to green transformation, we can lead the TRNC to a more prosperous future,” Tatar said.
Emphasising the relevance of Mehmet Şimşek’s economic insights to the TRNC, Tatar remarked, “Many of the recent developments we observe with satisfaction point to a stronger, terror-free Turkey, advancing toward its vision for the Century of Türkiye — a vision that positions Turkey as a global actor.”
Tatar also criticised recent actions by the Greek Cypriot side, stating that attacks and arrests had caused deep concern in the TRNC. “As I told Holguín yesterday, the arrests as a form of threat — aimed at undermining our stability and extinguishing hopes for a cooperative two-state future — will not bring happiness to anyone.”
He said he conveyed a similar message to Greek Cypriot leader Nikos Christodoulides, adding, “If he believes he can force us into submission, he is making a serious mistake.”
