Üstel: Economic Flights Between Turkey and Ercan to Begin After Eid

Üstel stated that shuttle services to Istanbul will commence, with low-cost flights also being planned for other major cities, and added that Turkish Cypriot aviation personnel will once again take to the skies.

According to a statement from the Prime Minister’s Office, Üstel’s recent visit to Ankara and meetings with top executives from Turkey’s leading airline companies have borne fruit, resulting in a long-anticipated step towards affordable air travel for the Turkish Cypriot people.

"This move stems from a determined political will to end the long-standing air travel difficulties endured by our people," said Üstel. "Air travel is not a luxury—it is a right."

Shuttle Services to Istanbul and Other Cities

Üstel announced that shuttle services to Istanbul will begin shortly and that similar arrangements are being made for Ankara, İzmir, Antalya, and Adana, allowing affordable travel to and from these major Turkish cities.

He underlined that this development is not only a matter of convenience but also a significant step in strengthening ties between Turkey and the TRNC.

“We Are Implementing Aziz Kent’s Vision”

Recalling the late tourism pioneer Aziz Kent’s advocacy for shuttle flights, Üstel said: "Aziz Kent frequently called for shuttle services between the TRNC and Turkey. Today, we are bringing his vision to life. This is an opportunity the tourism sector has long awaited. From now on, scheduled flights will run between designated locations in Turkey and the TRNC, with fixed minimum and maximum fare limits."

Aviation Personnel to Return to the Skies

Üstel also noted that efforts are underway to rehire former pilots and cabin crew who once served with Cyprus Turkish Airlines. "Many Turkish Cypriot pilots and cabin crew will be employed on these regular flights between the TRNC and Turkey," he said, pledging to open a new path for local aviation professionals.

Reforms in Sea Transportation and Border Crossings

Üstel added that improvements are also planned for maritime ports of entry, with further details to be announced in the coming days. Despite efforts by the Greek Cypriot side to obstruct existing crossings, the TRNC government is taking concrete steps to open new checkpoints and expand connectivity.

Prime Minister Üstel emphasized that despite international political embargoes and isolation, the TRNC government remains committed to a people-focused and action-driven approach. He stressed that this initiative is not merely a transportation project, but a reflection of the TRNC’s determination to stand on its own and assert its political resolve.
