Arıklı: The TRNC’s Alternative Is Not Federation but the Taiwan or Nakhchivan Model

Minister of Public Works and Transport Erhan Arıklı has stated that if the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) remains unrecognized, it could proceed based on models similar to Taiwan or Nakhchivan, rather than pursuing a federal solution.

In remarks to HaberTürk, Arıklı also accused Greek Cypriot leader Nikos Christodoulides of trying to sabotage the planned July talks through property-related lawsuits.
“The TRNC’s alternative is not federation,” Arıklı said. “If the TRNC is not going to be recognized, we will continue along the lines of the Taiwan or Nakhchivan model.”
Claiming that the Greek Cypriot side is using property lawsuits to undermine the negotiations, Arıklı said Christodoulides was one of the key figures who derailed the Crans-Montana talks. “Christodoulides is continuing the same stance. If this persists, the talks in July will be nothing more than a tourist visit,” he added.
