T&T: Taxi Occupation Behind Chaos at Ercan Airport

T&T Airport Operations has blamed longstanding traffic chaos at Ercan Airport on taxi operators who, for over a decade, have run their businesses rent-free, creating disorder and depriving the state of millions in revenue.

In a statement released over the weekend, T&T revealed that certain taxi drivers have failed to pay any rent for the past 12 years, despite continuing to operate within airport premises, including in front of the newly opened terminal building. The company estimates a debt of approximately 50 million TL, which has also prevented the transfer of an estimated 27.7 million TL to the state budget.
The company described the situation as a “rule-defying occupation”, stressing that the taxi operators in question are not only bypassing contractual obligations but also occupying the two lanes in front of the arrivals hall, causing significant difficulties for passengers, tourists, and the general public.
“The first impression for many visitors to our country is this scene of disorder and congestion,” the company stated.
Passenger Numbers Surge, System Remains Stagnant
T&T pointed out that prior to the opening of the new terminal, 36 taxis served around 2 million annual passengers. Despite expectations of handling 5.7 million passengers by the end of 2025, the number of taxis has remained the same, without a corresponding update to infrastructure or regulation.
The company emphasized that many international airports regulate taxi operations with clear standards—from vehicle colours to designated pick-up points—and said a similar systematic structure is urgently needed at Ercan.
“T” Licence Plates on the Black Market
Another issue raised by T&T was the black market value of “T” taxi licence plates, which are issued by the state free of charge but reportedly now sell for up to £300,000. T&T argued that despite profiting from this informal trade, some taxi operators continue to occupy airport space without paying any rent, creating what the company described as a major injustice and a threat to public order and safety.
T&T concluded its statement by calling for immediate action from relevant authorities to enforce regulations, collect owed debts, and implement a proper system that serves both airport users and the wider public interest.
