According to the government spokesman’s announcement, Cyprus is now in full operational readiness, supported by modern equipment, a clear strategy and strengthened personnel.

Speaking at the presidential palace, he stated that Cyprus now has the “highest number of trained forest firefighters it has ever seen, alongside the most powerful fleet of ground and aerial firefighting vehicles”.

From June 1, nine main aircraft are already operating across the island, with two more expected in the coming days. The total fleet will include five helicopters and six aircraft.

This year, for the first time, firefighting aircraft began arriving as early as March.

Officials say the early deployment allows for a longer window of preparedness ahead of the summer’s peak wildfire risk. The aircraft are either leased or provided under state agreements with other countries. All are supported by trained flight crews.

In addition, five more aircraft will be available in a support role from the National Guard, the police, and the British Bases.

Letymbiotis also confirmed that Cyprus has begun transitioning to its own fleet. The government is in the process of acquiring 10 firefighting planes and four medium-sized helicopters. Long-term plans include the purchase of a heavy-duty aircraft and a long-range coordination plane.

Since April 2025, full responsibility for aerial firefighting has been transferred to the National Guard, with the goal of improving flight safety and better managing the fleet.

The spokesman also announced that the Forestry College will reopen in September for the first time in nearly a decade. Preventative measures are already in motion, including controlled grazing in Pyrgos Tyllirias and the free distribution of shredders to forest-edge communities to reduce flammable vegetation.
