In a written statement, Dayıoğlu said the CMC site has remained unrestored for years due to ongoing legal uncertainties.

He noted that activities by Port-Isbi, the company that took over the site in 2007, were halted by the government after it failed to meet contractual obligations. “Because the lawsuit filed by Port-Isbi against the state has dragged on unresolved for years, the CMC site has been abandoned to its fate. The legal uncertainty has led to increasing negative effects on the environment and human health from heavy metal residues in the area,” he said.

Dayıoğlu added that despite scientific reports produced following two international conferences held in the early 2000s, no concrete action has been taken.

“As the Lefke Environmental and Ecology Association, we are closely monitoring the issue and expect necessary measures to be taken for the health and wellbeing of local residents,” Dayıoğlu said, urging a timely resolution to the problem.
