The verdict was delivered by Judge Vedia Berkut Barkın, presiding over the panel alongside Senior Judge Füsun Cemaller and Judge Tutku Candaş.

Judge Barkın emphasized that robbery, the charge for which Kaya was convicted, is a severe crime carrying a possible life sentence. The judge noted that the offence seriously undermines public trust, creates fear, disrupts social order, and significantly harms the public interest.

The charge of kidnapping with the aim of unlawful detention carries a penalty of up to seven years. Barkın stated that this crime infringes upon constitutionally guaranteed personal freedoms and inviolability, damaging individuals’ physical integrity, dignity, and honour, while causing widespread anxiety and jeopardizing societal security.

During the incident, Kaya and accomplices entered a workplace and threatened to shoot the spinal cord of M.K. if two mobile phones valued at 950 dollars were not handed over, the court heard.

Describing Kaya’s conduct as reckless and deeply unsettling to society, Judge Barkın announced the unanimous decision to impose a four-year prison sentence.
