Thukididis had reported on the Aykut case in summer 2024 for broadcaster Sigma. His piece featured an interview with Aykut that had previously aired on the Turkish-Cypriot channel NTV in 2023.

In response to a question from Aykut’s defence layer Maria Neophytou, Thukididis said the topic of the report had been assigned to him and that during the course of his research he came across the interview that was subsequently featured in his story.

The interview in question had recently been shown as part of Aykut’s ongoing trial as evidence. While Thukididis had not been included in the initial list of prosecution witnesses, he was since been added as witness 115.

The former journalist Thukididis was the sole witness to testify on Tuesday.

The trial is set to continue on June 19 with the testimonies of the owners of Greek Cypriot land on which the company linked with the defendant allegedly developed and operated real estate.

Aykut was arrested in June 2024 while attempting to cross from the north to the Republic.

He is the founder of the Afik Group, which has carried out various construction projects in Trikomo, many of which are believed to be on Greek Cypriot land.
