Gören Sentenced to One Year in Prison for Drug Offences in Nicosia

Murat Gören, who stood trial at the Nicosia Assize Court on charges of possession, supply, and illicit financial gain involving methamphetamine, was sentenced to one year in prison on Tuesday.

The charges against Gören included the acquisition and possession of 2.603 grams of methamphetamine, supplying 225 milligrams of the substance to another person, and unlawfully obtaining 800 TL from the sale. Gören pleaded guilty to all charges.
Delivering the verdict on behalf of the bench—comprising Presiding Judge Füsun Cemaller, Senior Judge Vedia Berkut Barkın, and Judge Tutku Candaş—Judge Cemaller highlighted that methamphetamine is a particularly dangerous narcotic and considered this an aggravating factor in sentencing.
While the relatively small quantity of the drug was noted as a mitigating circumstance, the court also took into account that Gören had profited from distributing the drug. “Our Supreme Court has made it clear that those who contribute to the spread of drugs and profit from sales should receive harsher penalties,” said Judge Cemaller.
In addition to the current charges, the court also considered a related case involving the possession of 9.398 grams of methamphetamine, for which Gören also pleaded guilty. His criminal record, including a prior conviction in 2021, was treated as a further aggravating factor.
The court acknowledged Gören’s cooperation with the investigation and his early admission of guilt as factors in his favor. Gören had been held in custody since 27 May 2025.
Judge Cemaller stressed the importance of imposing deterrent sentences for serious and widespread crimes like drug offences, in line with Supreme Court principles. After weighing all relevant factors, including Gören’s status as a married father of two, the court sentenced him to one year in prison.
