The SigmaLive news site reported that in the wake of Israel’s attacks on Iranian territory, all commercial flights between the Republic of Cyprus and Israel have been halted. As tensions in the region soared, numerous international flights bound for Israel were diverted to South Cyprus, particularly to the airports in Paphos and Larnaca.
According to the report, 20 passenger aircraft that aborted landings in Israel at the last minute were redirected to Cyprus, where passengers were accommodated in hotels and other facilities across the island.
Evacuation Operation Underway
In a related development, South Cyprus Government Spokesman Konstantinos Letymbiotis announced on social media that President Nikos Christodoulides has called an emergency meeting of the National Security Council in response to the evolving regional crisis.
Letymbiotis also confirmed that the Republic of Cyprus has activated its “ESTIA” Special National Plan to facilitate the reception and safe transit of third-country nationals evacuating from Israel through South Cyprus.
