Property Issue on the Table: Drifting Away from a Solution Leads Society Towards a Harder Future

The Union of the Chambers of Cyprus Turkish Engineers and Architects (KTMMOB) convened to assess the ongoing issues surrounding property and their broader societal impacts. As part of this effort, KTMMOB met with representatives of the Cyprus Turkish Building Contractors Association (KTİMB), which has launched an initiative to seek solutions to these problems.

KTMMOB President Seran Aysal emphasized that distancing from a negotiated solution was driving society towards an increasingly difficult future. She warned that the accumulation of past mistakes, combined with the withdrawal from solution-oriented dialogue, had already begun to bear visible negative consequences.
Representatives from both organizations participated in the meeting, including KTMMOB Board Members Celal Devrim Önen and Görkem Çelik; Onur Olguner, Chair of the Chamber of Architects; Mehmet Toycan, Chair of the Chamber of Electrical Engineers; and Ayşe Pekrioğlu Balkıs from the Chamber of Civil Engineers. From KTİMB, Sectoral Issues Executive Committee Member Ceyhun Tunalı, Committee Advisor Erhan Erçin, and Committee Coordinator Pınar Atıl were also present.
Aysal noted that the developments—especially those felt more acutely in recent weeks—had become a major concern for the union's leadership. She stated that with growing division and eroding public trust, there is an urgent need for citizens and organizations to act with courage and unity in order to address these pressing issues.
KTİMB representatives shared updates on their current initiatives and underlined their commitment to engaging with all segments of society to explore collective solutions.
The meeting also featured in-depth discussions on recent arrests on the island, legal actions, last week’s rulings by the European Court of Human Rights, and potential actions both on the island and internationally. Participants also explored how the breakdown of intercommunal dialogue continues to hamper prospects for resolution, and brainstormed viable paths forward.
