Water Price Doubles for Municipalities: Tariff Hikes Expected
The price of water supplied from Turkey to municipalities in the TRNC has nearly doubled, prompting expectations of price hikes at the local level. Under a new regulation published in the Official Gazette on June 11, 2025, the revised pricing will take effect on June 15.
According to the regulation, the price of drinking water sold to municipalities has been raised from 9.80 TL to 18.28 TL per cubic meter (ton), marking a significant increase. The adjustment means municipalities will now pay almost twice as much for water sourced from Turkey.
Public Braces for Higher Bills
Attention now turns to municipal councils, which are expected to determine new consumer tariffs in the coming days. Residents, already struggling with rising living costs and shrinking purchasing power, are anxiously awaiting the impact on their household bills.
Özçınar: Water Price Hikes Unavoidable
Mahmut Özçınar, President of the Union of Turkish Cypriot Municipalities and Mayor of Morphou, commented on the matter in an interview with Kıbrıs Postası. Özçınar stated that water supply costs are determined by the Water Department, and that municipalities have little choice but to reflect these increased costs in their own tariffs.
He noted that each municipality would set the new rate through its respective council. “These adjustments are made once a year. It’s incorrect to claim that ‘Turkey raised water prices’—rather, increases in energy costs have also affected the price of water supplied from Turkey,” Özçınar explained.
