Kalashnikov, Ammunition and Drugs Seized in Kyrenia: Two Suspects Remanded for Three More Days

Fuat Uğraşlı and Saadet Ateş, who were arrested during the “Uzun Yol Operation” carried out in Kyrenia and Esentepe, will remain in custody for three more days as the investigation continues.

The two suspects were found in possession of large quantities of ammunition, illegal drugs, and a Kalashnikov rifle. Authorities are also investigating a claim that the weapon dates back to the TMT era and may have been used by EOKA, although no such firearm is recorded in existing inventories.
During the hearing at the Kyrenia District Court, Police Sergeant Mustafa Özmüezzin of the Kyrenia Criminal Division provided details of the operation conducted by the Prevention of Crime Unit on 4 June 2025. A search of Uğraşlı’s vehicle and residence uncovered a 7.62 mm Kalashnikov rifle, 16 magazines, and 533 rounds of live ammunition. In addition, approximately 376 grams of cannabis, 5 grams of heroin, and 70 grams of cocaine were seized, along with two precision scales and cash believed to be proceeds from drug sales—€775, $1,015, £950, and ₺10,420.
According to Özmüezzin, analysis of the suspects’ mobile phones revealed ongoing communication with an individual referred to as “Boss,” suggesting organized activity.
The court was also informed of a claim made by Uğraşlı’s lawyer during a previous hearing, asserting that the rifle had belonged to Uğraşlı’s father and was a relic from the TMT period, used by EOKA. However, police investigations found no record of such a weapon in official inventories from the TMT.
Blood test results showed the presence of cocaine and cannabis in both suspects. While the investigation is ongoing, police requested an additional three days of detention.
A third person initially arrested, Orhan Korkmaz, was released after it was determined he had no connection to the alleged crimes. His lawyer, Hüseyin Koralp, confirmed that Korkmaz had been cleared of all charges.
Presiding Judge Evren Mürsel approved the police request, ordering that Uğraşlı and Ateş remain in custody for a further three days.
