It also said it would be avoiding overflying Israeli, Iraqi, Iranian and Syrian airspace until further notice.

“This decision follows the recent escalation of the situation in the Middle East. The safety and security of its passengers, crew and aircraft remains the highest priority for Wizz Air and the airline is closely monitoring developments in coordination with the relevant authorities,” it added.

Wizz Air said it would be “contacting affected customers directly via email (who booked directly with the airline) with information on their options, including rebooking or refunds.”

“Customers who have booked via third parties, should contact these providers directly,” it said.

The airline will “continue to provide updates as the situation evolves”.

On Friday, all flights between Cyprus and Israel, both arrivals and departures, were suspended in the wake of the Israeli offensive on Iran.

According to Hermes Airports live data, arrivals and departures were suspended by the airlines operating the route, among them Cyprus Airways, TUS, Sundor, Arkia, Air Haifa and Wizz Air.

On Saturday, more flights to and from Cyprus in the Middle East were cancelled as the conflict continued to escalate. Destinations included Tel Aviv, Beirut, Haifa and Amman.

Later on Saturday, government spokesman Konstantinos Letymbiotis said a total of 32 flights had been diverted to Cyprus since Friday morning as a result of the ongoing conflict.
