Tatar Responds to CTP: "They Avoided Unity and Are Trying to Distract with Perception Games"

President Ersin Tatar has issued a strong response to criticism from Republican Turkish Party (CTP) leader Tufan Erhürman, who claimed the president “said nothing new.” Accusing the opposition of deliberately distorting the facts, Tatar said, “They avoided unity and are now trying to distract with perception games.”

In a written statement, Tatar said the opposition not only ignored his call for unity in the face of attacks on Turkish Cypriot rights but also attempted to mislead the public through partisan media outlets and unfounded claims.
"The reason I went to Parliament was clear," Tatar stated. "It was to demonstrate solidarity with our people against the increasingly aggressive and oppressive policies of the Greek Cypriot side—especially on the property issue—and to call for a united stance from Parliament."
Tatar stressed that his appeal was not a political ploy but an act of social responsibility. He criticized the CTP’s dismissal of his call for unity as "meaningless," calling it both unfortunate and troubling.
Referring to the closed parliamentary session, Tatar noted that Erhürman spoke twice—once for about 45 minutes and again for 20 minutes—and thus had ample opportunity to express his views. Tatar said he then returned to the podium to respond, but was met with vocal interruptions and accusations from opposition MPs that their speaking rights had been curtailed.
“I explicitly said, ‘Ask whatever you want, I am ready to answer. I have no reservations.’ Despite this, they refused to engage, declaring, ‘We will not ask anything,’ and continued their criticisms,” Tatar explained. “This manipulation of facts shows that their stance was premeditated.”
Tatar concluded by reiterating that his presence in Parliament was aimed at showing that the Turkish Cypriot people are not alone in the face of pressure from the Greek Cypriot leadership. “There is no need to twist the facts. What I said and why I was there are perfectly clear,” he stated.
