Akansoy: We Are Working to Overcome the Traumas Between CTP and TDP

Republican Turkish Party (CTP) MP Asım Akansoy acknowledged the presence of “past traumas” between his party and the Communal Democracy Party (CDP), saying, “We are working to overcome them.” He added that CTP is striving to act in an inclusive and broad-based manner.

Speaking on Gündem, a program on Kıbrıs Postası TV hosted by Ulaş Barış, Akansoy made key statements about the presidential election scheduled for October and ongoing discussions between CTP and the CDP.
Akansoy noted that CTP has been in contact with the CDP for a long time, both formally and informally. “Of course, CDP will make its own decision. We have shared evaluations. Within this framework, we must proceed carefully,” he said.
“We Are Trying to Move Past the Old Traumas Between CTP and CDP”
Stating that CTP is doing its best to be inclusive and operate on a wider scale, Akansoy added, “There are historical traumas between CTP and the CDP. We are trying to overcome them. We must look ahead.”
“Tatar Did Not Want to Face MPs”
Referring to the closed session in Parliament last Tuesday initiated at President Ersin Tatar’s request, Akansoy criticized the procedure of the meeting. He emphasized that it was not the Parliament but Tatar who called for the session and that MPs were told Tatar would not be accepting questions. “Only party leaders and group chairs were allowed to speak. All 50 MPs have the right to ask questions. This kind of procedure is unacceptable. Tatar didn’t want to confront MPs. If you’re afraid of drowning, don’t go into the water. If you’re not going to dance, don’t step onto the floor,” Akansoy said.
“Tatar Made a Definition of Sovereign Equality in the Closed Session—He Should Share It with the Public”
Akansoy also called on President Tatar to publicly share the definition of “sovereign equality” that he presented during the closed session. He criticized Tatar’s call for unity on the property issue as unrealistic, adding, “Our perspectives are 180 degrees apart. It’s Tatar’s proposed model for solving the Cyprus problem that has brought us to this point. The common ground has been destroyed.”
“We Have Hit Rock Bottom”
Akansoy also pointed to the consequences of policies pursued in cooperation with the Turkish government, highlighting issues such as the property crisis, economic contraction, and intercommunal distrust. “Looking at all of this, it’s clear that the political path Tatar has chosen is unsustainable. The property crisis only added fuel to the fire. We’ve hit rock bottom,” he said.
While acknowledging that the prospects for progress on the Cyprus issue are weak, Akansoy concluded that the aim should be to ensure that Turkish Cypriots are not unjustly victimized.
