Künzel Case: No Reason Given for Arrest, Says Defendant

Ewa Izabella Künzel, a German real estate agent being tried by the Greek Cypriot authorities over allegations of “property usurpation” involving former Greek Cypriot properties in the TRNC, appeared once again before the court yesterday. During the hearing, Künzel stated that she had not been informed of the reason for her arrest and had not been given any information regarding the charges against her.

According to Alithia, Künzel recounted the events from her perspective, responding via an interpreter to questions regarding access to legal counsel, notification of arrest reasons, the provision of an interpreter, and the search of her personal belongings. She said she was handed a document in Greek and her lawyer attempted to translate it using Google Translate.
Künzel noted that during her initial court appearance and meetings with her lawyer at the police station, no interpreter was provided. It was only later that she received a German-English dictionary through her lawyer. She also described feeling pressured, expressing particular embarrassment over forgetting how to write the letter “q” in the English alphabet under stress.
She rejected claims that she had consented to searches of her mobile phone, computer, or hard drives.
The court proceedings regarding her objection to the arrest and search procedures, described as a “trial within a trial,” are set to continue on June 20, July 7, and July 9. Künzel will remain in custody during this period.
