Speaking at the “Athletes of the Year” award ceremony organized by the Cyprus Turkish Sports Writers Association (KTSYD), Üstel emphasized the role of sports in the Turkish Cypriot community's struggle for existence and the determination of youth.

According to a statement from the Prime Ministry, Üstel said, “Even during the struggle for existence in the 1950s, the Turkish Cypriots did not neglect sports. Despite all hardships, our people continued sports activities and made their voices heard worldwide.”

He recalled that despite gaining freedom following the 20 July 1974 Peace Operation, the Turkish Cypriot community still faces various embargoes and isolations. “Despite all these restrictions, our youth have achieved significant successes in sports with the support of our federations and government. Our children are determined to demonstrate the existence of the Turkish Cypriot people,” Üstel stated.

Underscoring that they have supported youth in all areas of sports since the beginning of their term, Üstel added: “Over the past three years, the sports budget has been doubled. This reflects our strong commitment to enabling our youth to represent our country internationally.”

Concluding his speech, Üstel congratulated the award-winning athletes and said, “I wholeheartedly congratulate all those who received awards tonight and respectfully greet everyone who contributed to this wonderful event.”
