Talks Begin on Southern Cyprus’ Schengen Zone Membership

Negotiations have commenced regarding Southern Cyprus’ accession to the Schengen Area.

The Fileleftheros newspaper reported that DIKO MP Hrisis Pandelidis announced the issue was discussed yesterday in the House of Representatives’ Foreign Affairs and European Affairs Committee.
The newspaper noted that Pandelidis praised the Greek Cypriot Government for its steps toward Schengen membership, stating that joining the Schengen Area will place “Republic of Cyprus” citizens on equal footing with other citizens and will facilitate both travel and entrepreneurial activities.
According to the report, Pandelidis expressed hope that the relevant bill will be reviewed as soon as possible and forwarded to the House for approval.
