Azerbaijan to Host 17th ECO Summit in Symbolic Hankendi

Azerbaijan will host the 17th Summit of the Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO) on 4 July in the city of Hankendi. The summit, to be chaired by Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, will also be attended by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.

The summit will bring together heads of state and ministers from ECO member countries, including Uzbekistan, Iran, Pakistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Pakistan. President Ersin Tatar of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) will also participate as a representative of the organization's observer member.
The summit agenda will focus on enhancing cooperation among member states in areas such as trade, economy, investment, transport, transit, and climate change. Progress within the ECO framework will be reviewed, and leaders are expected to hold bilateral meetings on the sidelines.
Holding the summit in Hankendi — a city once used as a capital by an occupation regime in Karabakh — carries strong symbolic significance for Azerbaijan.
Established in 1985, the ECO comprises Turkey, Pakistan, Iran, Afghanistan, Azerbaijan, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Turkmenistan as full members, with the TRNC holding observer status. The summit of heads of state is held biennially.
