Çavuş Warns Water Use May Hit 73 Million Cubic Metres

Minister of Agriculture and Natural Resources Hüseyin Çavuş has warned that without proper water conservation, total water consumption could rise to 73 million cubic metres. Speaking on BRT’s “NET Olalım” programme, Çavuş addressed the growing challenges surrounding water usage.

He emphasized the need to reduce water consumption, particularly during the summer months, and called on both municipalities and the public to act responsibly.
Stating that the Ministry of Agriculture and the Water Department are responsible for delivering water to storage tanks, Çavuş noted that distribution from those tanks falls under the jurisdiction of local municipalities.
“We cannot impose any restrictions or reductions on the water we deliver to the tanks,” he said. “In Nicosia, water consumption increased by 20 percent between the first five months of 2024 and the same period in 2025. In İskele, the rise was 39 percent. Similar trends have been observed in other municipalities as well. Before entering the high-consumption period, we met with all municipalities to stress the need for precautionary measures in water usage.”
He reported that in 2024, a total of 57 million cubic metres of water had been pumped to storage tanks — 44 million cubic metres from Turkey and 13 million from local sources.
“If this upward trend continues and we continue to use water inefficiently, the amount of water coming from Turkey alone could rise to 60 million cubic metres,” Çavuş said. “When local sources are added, total consumption may reach 73 million cubic metres. That is why it is essential to use water wisely. Municipalities have a major role to play, and citizens must contribute by conserving water.”
Çavuş stressed the need for conservation in July and August, calling on local governments and the public to take urgent responsibility.
He added that he has been in discussions with municipalities in regions where consumption is rising rapidly and will continue those talks. He also highlighted suspicious consumption patterns in Nicosia.
“In Nicosia, water consumption remains the same during both day and night. We are supplying 1,200 tonnes of water per hour. It is impossible for consumption to remain constant around the clock. We must identify where this water is going,” he said.
