Ryanair Confirms it will Increase Free Cabin Bag Size

Ryanair will increase its free cabin bag dimensions from 40x25x20cm to 40x30x20cm within weeks, the budget airline announced, responding to European Union efforts to standardise baggage allowances across carriers.

The change increases permitted baggage volume from 20 litres to 24 litres and will be implemented before the summer holidays, a Ryanair spokesperson told media in the UK. The adjustment follows the EU’s establishment of minimum bag dimensions at 40x30x15cm.
“Following the new EU minimum bag size of 40x30x15cm, Ryanair will increase its max ‘personal bag’ dimensions to 40x30x20cm, so that Ryanair’s ‘personal bag’ allowance is bigger than the EU standard,” the spokesperson said.
The implementation requires recalibrating airport sizing gauges across Ryanair’s network. Passengers with currently compliant bags may need to purchase new luggage to meet the revised dimensions.
Airlines for Europe (A4E) has been negotiating with EU Transport Commissioner Adina Vălean to simplify passenger experiences through standardised baggage rules. The organisation confirmed all member airlines will implement the guaranteed dimensions by the end of the 2025 summer season.
“This will align A4E members with the decision of member states made last month and bring more clarity to passengers across Europe,” said Ourania Georgoutsakou, A4E managing director.
Most major carriers already exceed the new standardised dimensions. British Airways, Jet2 and easyJet maintain allowances above the EU minimum, with easyJet confirming its dimensions will remain at 45x36x20cm, providing 32 litres capacity.
The European Parliament’s transport committee has approved measures requiring airlines to permit two pieces of cabin baggage and eliminate fees for small carry-on bags. The proposed legislation would allow passengers to carry handbags weighing up to 7kg without additional charges on EU routes, including flights between the EU and UK.
Budget carriers including Ryanair, easyJet and Wizz Air have opposed the measures, arguing they would be impractical to implement.
