Holguin Meets with Christodoulides Ahead of New York Summit

United Nations Secretary-General's Personal Envoy for Cyprus, Maria Angela Holguin Cuellar, met with Greek Cypriot leader Nikos Christodoulides on Monday as part of her ongoing efforts ahead of the upcoming summit in New York.

According to the Cyprus Broadcasting Corporation (RIK), the meeting between Holguin and Christodoulides lasted approximately one hour.
Following the talks, Holguin stated that she intends to work "intensively and without interruption" on Confidence-Building Measures (CBMs), with the aim of achieving meaningful progress during the New York conference and securing a better future for both communities on the island.
Greek Cypriot Government Spokesman Konstantinos Letimbiotis also commented after the meeting, emphasizing that efforts continue with the goal of restarting negotiations. He confirmed that Holguin would meet later in the day with both sides' negotiators to evaluate the outcomes of the multilateral conference held in March.
Letimbiotis reiterated that Holguin remains committed to reviving the negotiation process. Responding to a question about whether Holguin is focused solely on CBMs, he clarified that such measures do not replace the negotiation process itself, adding that the Greek Cypriot side’s goal is the resumption of talks from where they left off.
He noted that the upcoming multilateral conference this month will also address the core aspects of the Cyprus issue, and said the Greek Cypriot side is well-prepared for these discussions.
When asked about Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar’s alleged intransigence, Letimbiotis responded that this has been evident from the outset and that despite the current diplomatic activity, no outcome is guaranteed. However, he stressed that efforts are ongoing.
