Toros: Political Equality Key to Cyprus Peace and Regional Stability

Republican Turkish Party (CTP) MP Fikri Toros has said that recent developments in Cyprus and the Eastern Mediterranean reflect a profound transformation in the global order. Toros emphasised that ending regional fragility requires a fair, lasting, and comprehensive settlement in Cyprus based on political equality.

Speaking on the evolving dynamics in the region, Toros noted that today, shared interests focused on security and energy have begun to outweigh countries’ traditional political stances. He said the shifting landscape of energy policies, security concerns, and alliances in the Eastern Mediterranean makes the Cyprus problem a litmus test for whether a new regional and global order can be built on the foundations of peace, justice, and equality.
Toros argued that this emerging order should not merely be shaped by the interests of major powers, but must also be inclusive enough to meet the legitimate expectations of regional populations.
“The Only Way to End Regional Fragility Is a Fair and Lasting Settlement in Cyprus Based on Political Equality”
Calling for an end to the treatment of the Cyprus issue as a “frozen conflict,” Toros stressed that the path to peace must be based on justice and permanence. He underlined that regional fragility can only be overcome through a comprehensive settlement in Cyprus that respects the political equality of both communities.
He urged international powers to shift from managing conflicts to resolving them permanently, which, he said, requires concrete support for the parties involved and an unwavering commitment to peace processes. In the specific context of Cyprus, he added that leadership committed to a vision of partnership rooted in political equality and security is essential.
Toros concluded that a comprehensive settlement in Cyprus would not only ensure long-term stability in the Eastern Mediterranean but also serve as a cornerstone for legitimacy in the emerging global order.
