Solyalı: Citizenship Figures Still Hidden, 204,000 Discrepancy in Projections

Republican Turkish Party (CTP) MP Ürün Solyalı has accused the government of concealing population and citizenship data, claiming a serious lack of transparency. He pointed out that the Prime Ministry’s 2025 projection, which excludes students and military personnel, suggests a population of 590,000—raising questions about how this figure has grown so dramatically compared to previous years.

Speaking to the press, Solyalı highlighted that according to official projections released in previous years, the population was 420,000 in 2019 and 476,000 in 2023. He noted that the sudden increase to 590,000 in just two years reflects a discrepancy of 204,000 people and demanded an explanation.
“How Can a 204,000 Increase Be Justified?”
“If the projected population—excluding students and soldiers—is now 590,000, why are the citizenship figures still being kept secret?” Solyalı asked, criticizing the government for failing to provide clarity on the issue.
He pointed to data from the Higher Electoral Board, which announced that the number of registered voters as of May 2025 is 215,611. In addition, the Ministry of Education reported that 38,750 KKTC citizens are enrolled in school through the final year of secondary education.
“Based on those figures, the number of citizens should be approximately 255,000,” Solyalı stated. “Yet we’re left having to estimate the number of citizens on our own. Why is this information being hidden?”
“No Transparency, Incomplete and Contradictory Statements”
Solyalı also noted that there are currently 105,000 individuals in the country on work permits and around 90,000 university students. “If the total number of people excluding soldiers is 680,000, then how many of them are citizens? Why won't the government say?” he asked.
He accused the government of deliberately withholding critical demographic information and managing the country with a lack of transparency. “They’ve again failed to present a breakdown of the citizenship figures. It’s as if this information is being treated as a state secret,” he concluded.
