70 Traffic Accidents, 19 Injured in One Week

A total of 70 traffic accidents occurred across the country between June 30 and July 6, resulting in 19 injuries and an estimated ₺3,455,000 in damages, according to the weekly report released by the Police General Directorate.

Of the 70 accidents, 12 involved injuries while 58 caused property damage. Speeding was once again the leading cause, responsible for 23 accidents. Other causes included careless driving (16), failure to stop at junctions (12), tailgating (9), and various other factors (10).

Accidents by region were recorded as follows: 23 in Nicosia, 19 in Kyrenia, 15 in Famagusta, 8 in Güzelyurt, and 5 in İskele.

1,972 Drivers Reported, 5 Arrested

During nationwide traffic inspections last week, police checked 12,369 drivers. Of these, 1,972 were reported for various offences and legal action was initiated. In addition, 234 vehicles were taken off the road and 5 drivers were arrested.

Traffic violations included:

  • Speeding: 595

  • Speeding detected by mobile cameras: 152

  • Dangerous driving: 11

  • Careless driving: 40

  • Driving without road tax: 220

  • Driving without a license: 5

  • Drunk driving: 44

  • Using a phone while driving: 40

  • Not wearing a seatbelt: 83

  • Ignoring traffic signs: 147

  • Running red lights: 4

  • Driving without inspection: 67

  • Driving uninsured or outside coverage: 39

  • Driving without “T” or “B” operator licenses: 14

  • Tinted windows: 22

  • Riding motorcycles without helmets: 6

  • Faulty or inadequate vehicle lighting: 13

  • Other violations: 622
