Çeler: Cyprus Has Turned Into an 'Open-Air Prison'

Leader of the Communal Democracy Party (TDP), Zeki Çeler, said Cyprus has effectively become an “open-air prison,” citing growing restrictions, a lack of dialogue, and the absence of a resolution process as contributing factors. Çeler made the remarks following a meeting with Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar, held as part of a series of briefings with political party leaders ahead of the Cyprus meetings in New York.

Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Çeler expressed concern over the prolonged political deadlock and its toll on Turkish Cypriots, noting that the lack of meaningful dialogue continues to cost time and opportunities. He said the South’s status as an EU member, and its reluctance to step outside its comfort zone, is working against the interests of Turkish Cypriots.
Çeler called for steps to be taken on the island itself, without waiting for the New York talks, particularly regarding confidence-building measures. He added that the sale of Greek Cypriot-owned properties in the north has led to a climate of fear, with contractors, businesspeople, and ordinary citizens disturbed by reports of arrests and legal threats, reinforcing a sense that the island has turned into “an open-air prison.”
The TDP leader also criticized the Greek Cypriot side for deliberately slowing down border crossing procedures, calling it a sign of bad faith. He urged the Turkish Cypriot authorities to complete preparations for opening new crossing points unilaterally if necessary. He pointed out that the Nicosia Turkish Municipality is ready to move forward with the Haspolat crossing and said his party supports the initiative.
Çeler concluded by expressing hope that the upcoming talks in New York would serve the interests of both communities.
