Uzun: "Cancellation of Aksa Contract Not Possible"

Chairman of the Board of the Cyprus Turkish Electricity Authority (Kıb-Tek), Gürsel Uzun, has firmly stated that the termination of the contract with private energy provider Aksa is not possible, likening it to the impossibility of cancelling the collective bargaining agreement with the union.

In a written statement, Uzun criticised those who frequently complain about Aksa but fail to support Kıb-Tek, accusing them of exploiting the institution both economically and politically. "Just as the Kıb-Tek Board cannot cancel the collective agreement with the union, the cancellation of the contract with Aksa is also out of the question," Uzun said.
He emphasised that Kıb-Tek’s priority is to protect the interests of both the public and the institution, and asserted that no one should doubt their commitment to this mission.
Highlighting the financial sustainability of Kıb-Tek, Uzun said the institution stands on its own feet and is able to pay off its debts. “The fact that our institution is now self-reliant has caused discomfort among certain interest groups and some union leaders,” he added.
Uzun noted that the authority has completely resolved its fuel supply issues, increased electricity production by 50 percent compared to 2022, and is responding swiftly to technical faults. He also revealed that preparations for the tender process to acquire two new power plants are nearing completion.
Regarding infrastructure developments, Uzun announced that service building projects for the districts of Güzelyurt, Famagusta, İskele, and Lefke have been finalised, and the tender documents are ready. He also stated that 10 new vehicles have been purchased for the institution, with further acquisitions in the pipeline.
“All of this is being achieved without incurring new debt—on the contrary, debts are being repaid,” Uzun stressed.
He also expressed concern over recent media reports, claiming that misinformation is being spread to mislead the public, damage reputations, and use Kıb-Tek as a political tool to attack the government and the Prime Minister. “We saw the need to inform the public due to these false and baseless allegations,” Uzun concluded.
