CTP MP Slams Tatar for Politicising Turkish Cypriot Struggle

Republican Turkish Party (CTP) MP for Nicosia, Sıla Usar İncirli, has sharply criticised President Ersin Tatar’s speech at the 20 July Peace and Freedom Day military parade, accusing him of exploiting the Turkish Cypriot people's collective struggle and suffering for personal political gain.

Usar İncirli said she found both the tone and content of Tatar’s remarks troubling, arguing that the president displayed “an angry and aggressive attitude” during a day of deep significance for the Turkish Cypriot community. “It is clear that Mr Tatar cannot bear the thought of anyone else becoming president. He delivered a speech devoid of political maturity, seeming to lose control in front of the full military and civilian protocol, as well as international guests,” she stated.
She condemned Tatar’s reference to the Turkish Cypriots' resistance between 1955 and 1974 as an attempt to serve his own propaganda, calling it “unacceptable and grave.” Usar İncirli emphasised that this chapter of history represents a shared struggle and heritage, not something to be used for political opportunism.
“If Mr Tatar is angry because he lacks the support to win another election, he should understand that the reason lies in his disconnect from the modern, democratic, fair, and forward-looking governance that the people are demanding,” she said.
Calling on Tatar to step aside if he truly prioritises the people over himself, Usar İncirli concluded: “Our country needs a leader who works not for themselves, but for the people—a leader who gives hope.”
