According to reports from “Philenews” and other outlets, the protest organized by the “DRASIS-KES” student union took place yesterday at 18:00 at the Greek Cypriot-controlled side of Metehan Border Gate. The border gate was temporarily closed due to the disturbances, with clashes between the police and students. Police intervened to control the demonstrators.

The “DRASIS-KES” student union stated on social media that police initially used verbal abuse and insults against the students and subsequently chemical agents (tear gas) to disperse them. Despite the police intervention, the students declared in a second statement that they would not abandon their struggle.

Alithia newspaper reported that in a video posted by the “DRASIS” student organization on social media, one protester attempted to burn the TRNC flag, but riot police took the flag from him and stopped the act.

The student group criticized the Greek Cypriot government and police for appearing to recognize the TRNC flag as a national symbol and for thereby legitimizing the “illegal pseudo-state” in the north.
