Tatar: MPs Who Once Declared ‘The Federation File Is Closed’ Now Support Erhürman

President Ersin Tatar criticised certain former coalition MPs for declaring support for CTP’s presidential candidate Tufan Erhürman, describing it as political inconsistency. Speaking on Kıbrıs Postası TV’s Sabah Postası programme, Tatar pointed out that the two-state solution approach was first introduced into a government programme seven years ago, and some of the MPs now backing Erhürman were the same individuals who then endorsed the policy declaring the federation option as closed.

“We Were the Ones Who Convinced Turkey”

Tatar stated that the two-state solution policy was accepted by Turkey as a result of efforts he initiated seven years ago. He highlighted that Kudret Özersay, then-leader of the People’s Party (HP), played a significant role in shaping this policy, which eventually made its way into international conferences and the records of the United Nations.

Criticism Over Support for Erhürman

Tatar recalled that the coalition government formed by the National Unity Party (UBP) and the People’s Party adopted the two-state model under the EU umbrella. He criticised Ayşegül Baybars, Gülşah Manavoğlu, and Jale Refik Rogers—three former MPs who endorsed that programme—for now supporting Erhürman, a staunch federalist. He labelled this as a contradiction with their earlier political positions.

On the Federation Model

Tatar argued that returning to a federation model would be regressive, stressing the importance of interstate relations rather than intercommunal ties. He said every engagement under this framework serves as a “bridge” and that the federal model poses significant risks to the Turkish Cypriot people, including the dilution of Turkish influence and guarantees.

Response to Wildfire and Denktaş Controversy

Regarding the recent wildfire in Limassol, Tatar said he immediately offered assistance through his special representative, but the Greek Cypriot side rejected the offer, not wanting to acknowledge Turkish Cypriot involvement. On the recent controversy over a book that allegedly insulted founding president Rauf Raif Denktaş, Tatar stated that he summoned the acting Attorney General and the Police Chief to the presidency and instructed them to take necessary action.

Remarks on Former President Mustafa Akıncı

Tatar also responded to recent comments made by former President Mustafa Akıncı, calling them “inappropriate” and accusing Akıncı of adopting unbecoming political tactics to justify himself.

Claims of Leading in Polls

Touching on the upcoming presidential election, Tatar claimed that he is leading in polls conducted by his team and noted that even opposition-commissioned polls show his support increasing. However, he acknowledged that the accuracy of polling remains debatable.

“Expanded Summits Took Place Thanks to Our Efforts”

Tatar emphasised that the expanded format of recent summits, involving Turkey, Greece, and the United Kingdom alongside the UN, were made possible by his diplomatic efforts. He accused the Greek Cypriot side of politicising even basic issues such as crossing points, stating they continuously demand concessions, which he firmly rejects.
