The arrest comes as part of an espionage investigation launched following the 19 July detention of five Greek Cypriots who allegedly crossed into the north via the Akyar crossing without immigration checks and entered a military restricted zone. Maps, title deeds, and various documents were found in the suspects’ vehicle.

Authorities said the investigation is ongoing and that there are strong suspicions the public employee supplied sensitive documents to the Greek Cypriot suspects.
