KIBTEK Director: Power to Be Restored Within Two Hours

An early morning fault and subsequent explosion at the KIB-TEK Güneşköy Transformer Station knocked out the country’s electricity network. Following the explosion at around 5:00 a.m., the system shut down automatically for protection, taking all power plants offline.

KIBTEK Director Dalman Aydın told BRT that the explosion caused a complete shutdown of the plants and that time was needed to restart operations. Aydın said that parts of Kyrenia and a large section of Nicosia have had power restored, and that full restoration across all areas is expected within approximately two hours.
Water Supply Disruptions
The Ministry of Agriculture and Natural Resources stated that the power outage has also affected water production facilities and transmission systems. This has led to temporary water cuts and low pressure in various parts of the country. Repair work is continuing at pace.
The ministry urged the public to use water resources carefully and sparingly, stressing that it is working in coordination with relevant departments to resolve the issue.
