Kyrenia Fake Passport Arrest Leads to Murder Suspect’s Transfer South

Daniel Yehonatan Zarug, 36, wanted in Israel on murder charges under an Interpol Red Notice, was arrested in Kyrenia on July 30 after being found with a fake passport. He was handed over to Greek Cypriot authorities by the United Nations Peacekeeping Force, and extradition proceedings to Israel have begun.

Zarug is accused of involvement in a fatal shooting in Israel and had reportedly been evading authorities abroad. His arrest in the TRNC highlights the island’s role as a transit point for fugitives due to its political division and lack of formal extradition arrangements between the two sides.
The UN-facilitated handover marks another rare instance of cross-divide cooperation in serious criminal cases.
