KTGB Warns Social Media Arguments Are Damaging Societal Relations

The Cyprus Turkish Journalists Association (KTGB) has warned that heated debates on social media are harming both individuals and broader societal relationships. The association emphasized the importance of journalists distinguishing between news and opinion, and urged social media users to be mindful of their language and expressions.

In a statement, KTGB said it has been closely monitoring recent developments and expressed serious concern over the tone of online discussions. The statement highlighted that while the language used in social media evaluations can be dangerous, actions like the Information Technologies and Communication Authority (BTHK) blocking access to a website without a court order in response to a debate are equally harmful.

The association stressed that journalists must avoid making accusatory statements without evidence, approach events objectively, and inform the public in an impartial manner. The statement read:

"Objectivity and impartiality must never be forgotten when reporting news. Journalists should refrain from including personal opinions, commentary, or evaluations within news reports. If a journalist wishes to offer commentary, it should be presented in a separate article, not within the news itself. Unfortunately, some of our media outlets have recently failed to uphold this distinction. We remind all journalists once again of the importance of keeping news and opinion separate for the reader."

KTGB also noted that the language and tone of social media comments are increasingly hostile. While criticism is a natural way of expressing opinions, the line between critique and insult is becoming dangerously blurred.
