UN Envoy Holguin to Meet President Tatar on September 2
According to sources from the Presidency, the Turkish Cypriot side has given prior approval for Khassim Diagne to replace Colin Stewart as Head of the UN Peacekeeping Force and the UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative, with the Greek Cypriot side having previously consented.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres is preparing to seek approval from the UN Security Council (UNSC) for Diagne’s appointment. Once the UNSC process is completed, a formal announcement will be made and the necessary administrative procedures carried out.
Presidential sources also indicate that the UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy for Cyprus, Maria Angela Holguin, is expected to arrive on the island on September 1 and meet with President Ersin Tatar on September 2, ahead of the UN General Assembly session scheduled for September 23.
