Akpınar Criticizes EU “So-Called State” Comment

Serhat Akpınar, Secretary General of the Democratic Party and MP for Kyrenia, criticized the European Union spokesperson’s description of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) as a “so-called state” and its judiciary as “so-called.” He said the remarks constitute a serious disrespect toward the democratic will, sovereignty, and independent judiciary of the Turkish Cypriot people.

Akpınar emphasized that the TRNC is an independent and sovereign state established through the free will of its citizens, and statements undermining its judicial system are inconsistent with international law. He stated that the Democratic Party rejects any remarks that question the independence and legitimacy of the country’s judicial institutions.

The party official also underlined that the EU should maintain a neutral and fair stance on the island, and that the Greek Cypriot side labeling the TRNC as “so-called” while ignoring its own judicial processes reflects a double standard.

Akpınar stressed that the Turkish Cypriot people live with dignity within their sovereign state and institutions, and international authorities have no right to belittle this existence. He added that the Democratic Party will continue to support President Ersin Tatar’s two-state solution vision and defend the rights of the Turkish Cypriot community alongside Turkey.
