UBP Secretary Rejects EU “Pseudo” Claims on TRNC Judiciary

The Secretary General of the National Unity Party (UBP), Oğuzhan Hasipoğlu, strongly rejected the European Union spokesperson’s description of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) and its judiciary as “pseudo.”

Hasipoğlu emphasized that the TRNC judiciary operates independently, impartially, and under the rule of law. He stated that the country’s courts are constitutionally and legally guaranteed to uphold fair and equal treatment in all cases.
“The questioning of our judiciary’s legitimacy through such statements by EU officials is unacceptable. It shows blatant disrespect toward both the democratic will of the Turkish Cypriot people and the rule of law,” Hasipoğlu said.
He criticized the EU for not addressing the detentions of non-Cypriot EU citizens—Germans, Ukrainians, and two Hungarians—by Greek Cypriot authorities, and for ignoring the European Court of Human Rights-recognized Immovable Property Commission while the so-called Republic of Cyprus carried out unlawful detentions.
“Those who act against the law are held accountable before our independent judiciary. No institution or individual can undermine the TRNC’s sovereign rights or judicial independence,” Hasipoğlu added.
He underlined that while the Turkish Cypriot people continue to operate their state institutions based on peace, security, and justice, the TRNC remains committed to international law.
Hasipoğlu also accused the EU of maintaining double standards, punishing the Turkish Cypriot community for supporting the Annan Plan in 2004 while rewarding Greek Cypriots who opposed it. He warned that unless the EU adopts a fair approach grounded in the realities of the island, such statements will continue to embolden the Greek Cypriot side and hinder, rather than advance, a resolution.
