Two Men Remanded in Custody in Nicosia Drug and Weapons Case

Durmuş Özder Gökay and Mustafa Behattin were brought before the court again after being arrested in operations carried out by the Crime Prevention Unit and the Anti-Narcotics and Anti-Smuggling Directorate in Nicosia and Gönyeli.

Police officer Cemal Ramiz testified that on 9 August 2025, the suspects attempted to flee when officers tried to check a parked vehicle with registration RY 628 in Nicosia, but they were soon caught in Gönyeli. A search of the vehicle uncovered 54,000 TL, €4,170, £1,950, $201, and approximately 0.5 grams of narcotics.
Searches of their residences on 10 August revealed further evidence. At Behattin’s home, police discovered two pistols and five live rounds hidden under a bed, around 112 grams of narcotics and a precision scale in a wardrobe. At Gökay’s residence, officers found another precision scale, spoons and a pipe with drug residue.
According to police, the suspects admitted in their voluntary statements that they had imported 560 grams of narcotics from the south of Cyprus under the instructions of another individual, selling part of it by leaving packages at various locations. They also confessed to obtaining the firearms from the south. A search of their mobile phones revealed videos of the suspects firing weapons into the air. The investigation is ongoing, with further evidence and individuals being sought.
The defence requested medical examinations for the accused and argued that detention conditions were inhumane. The court ordered that the suspects remain in custody for four more days, that they be examined by doctors, and that cell conditions be improved.
