Burak Maviş: 12% of Students to Start New School Year in Container Classrooms

KTÖS General Secretary Burak Maviş stated that schools will open on 15 September, emphasizing that KTÖS never strikes on the first day of school, though this does not mean their democratic right to strike will not be exercised in the future.

Speaking on Kıbrıs Postası TV’s Sabah Postası program with Gökhan Altıner, Maviş addressed key issues in the education agenda.
“KTÖS Will Not Prevent Schools from Opening”
Responding to the question of whether schools will open, Maviş said, “KTÖS will never take a stance to prevent schools from opening. The Minister of Education should have no concerns—schools will open on 15 September.” He stressed, however, that this does not limit future use of democratic strike rights.
12% of Students in Container Classrooms, 27% of Schools Under Renovation
Maviş noted that 12% of students will begin the new academic year in container classrooms, while 27% of schools remain under construction or renovation. He expects these works to be completed by February, freeing students from container classrooms.
Permanent Appointments Must Precede Election Ban
Addressing teacher appointments, Maviş criticized the Education Minister’s unclear approach, saying, “With the presidential election date set, permanent appointments should be made before the election ban begins. Education should be based on merit, not political calculations.”
Temporary Appointments During Election Ban Risk Partisan Favoritism
Maviş warned that while the government can make temporary appointments for essential positions during the election period, such actions could open the door to partisan favoritism. KTÖS recommendations include:
-
Using Public Service Commission exam results as the basis
-
Considering past performance reports from principals and inspectors
-
Ensuring appointments are based on professional merit, not politics
“Education Should Be About Merit, Not Political Calculations”
Maviş emphasized that temporary teachers should not remain insecure, and that arrangements must be made during the election ban to appoint those who passed the General Secondary Education Exam. He concluded, “Education should be about merit, not political calculations.”
