Hasipoğlu Replaces Gardiyanoğlu as Labour Minister

A major shake-up has taken place in the politics of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. Labour and Social Security Minister Sadık Gardiyanoğlu has been dismissed and replaced by Oğuzhan Hasipoğlu, Secretary-General of the National Unity Party (UBP).

Conflict Within the Ministry
For months, tensions had been simmering between Gardiyanoğlu and the ministry’s undersecretary, Tahir Serhat. According to reports, Serhat repeatedly filed complaints against Gardiyanoğlu with the Financial Police, while Gardiyanoğlu also lodged counter-complaints against Serhat. The files are said to still be under review.
Political Implications
Gardiyanoğlu’s dismissal is seen as the latest reflection of ongoing internal strife within the government. The undersecretary’s ability to retain his position amid the turmoil has once again highlighted the delicate balance of power between bureaucracy and politics in the TRNC.
